Guide

Reading journal prompts for every kind of book

The hardest part of a reading journal is the blank page. Keep this list nearby and answer two or three prompts per book — that is enough to remember it years later.

Before you start

  • Why did you pick this book right now?
  • What do you expect from it — comfort, a thrill, a challenge?
  • Where did you hear about it?
  • What mood are you in as you open page one?

While reading

  • Which line made you stop and reread it?
  • Who do you not trust yet, and why?
  • What would you do differently in the main character's place?
  • Which scene would you want to see filmed?
  • What is the book making you feel that you did not expect?
  • Is the pacing pulling you in or pushing you out?

After you finish

  • Describe the book in one sentence to a friend.
  • What will you still remember in a year?
  • Did the ending earn itself?
  • Who would love this book, and who would hate it?
  • Would you reread it? When?
  • What rating did you give it, and what stopped it from being higher?

Romance

  • Which trope carried the story?
  • Was the tension earned or rushed?
  • What was the best grovel or apology moment?
  • How would you rate the spice, and did it serve the plot?

Fantasy and sci-fi

  • What one rule of this world do you wish were real?
  • Where did the world-building lose you?
  • Which side character deserved their own book?

Thriller and mystery

  • When did you guess the twist?
  • Which clue was hidden best?
  • Was the narrator reliable — really?

Two-minute prompts

  • One word for this book.
  • One quote worth keeping.
  • One thing that annoyed you.
  • One mood tag: cosy, dark, hopeful, tense.

Keep the prompts with the book

Answers are worth far more when they live next to the book itself. In Booked & Beautiful each book has a journal section for notes, saved quotes with page numbers, tropes, mood and a spice rating — so your prompt answers are searchable instead of scattered across notebooks.
