Book tracking for readers

Tracking your reading only works if it takes seconds and tells you something later. This guide covers what to record, how to log progress on paper books and e-readers, and how shelves, ratings and goals turn a list into a reading history worth revisiting.

What to record for every book

Status (want to read, reading, read, DNF), start and finish dates, total pages, a rating and a couple of lines of notes. That is enough to produce pages read per month, genre and format breakdowns, and a yearly goal you can actually see progress against. Everything else — tropes, quotes, spice level, moods — is optional colour.
